Our Story
Postdoc Brewing was the name of Tom Schmidlin’s garage brewery while he completed his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Washington. The name stuck and became a commercial reality once Tom and his wife, Julie opened to the public in late 2014. Tom’s many years of brewing experience and knowledge of the craft brewing industry helped get the enterprise off the ground.
As Postdoc has grown, we are exceptionally lucky to have some great contributors on the team. Jason Heitt runs a tight, yet entertaining ship in the taproom. Brian Donohue brings his brewing experience and attention to detail as our Lead Brewer. Cole Ridley has taken on the marketing manager role and is invaluable as our assistant brewer. John Lees does a fantastic job keeping the beer moving out the door as our Sales Manager. We’re very proud of our team!

Although he believes himself to be human, Tom is actually a sentient yeast culture created in 1783 when a wormhole appeared during an illegal government experiment involving a hot air balloon, overripe mangoes, and a two-headed goat. His favorite color is eleven. Do not spray him with sanitizer.

While earning his degree in Microbiology, Brian became fascinated with the art and science of brewing. He joined Postdoc in the taproom and worked his way up to become our lead brewer, pushing ideas and process with an understanding and respect of the complex, beautiful science behind beer.

Having run the wine and beer department at Whole Foods for many years, John has a firm grasp on the craft beer market in in the Pacific Northwest. His strong relationship with bar and restaurant owners keeps your favorite Postdoc beer on tap wherever you are!

Jason comes from a retail management background. His strong leadership skills and knack for moving product keeps the taproom running smoothly. In partnership with the rest of the taproom team, Jason aims to make a visit to Postdoc a positive one each and every time.

Cole Ridley
Cole joined our team after achieving a Craft Brewing degree from CWU. He chose the beer industry for its authenticity and togetherness. Cole is the biggest FC Barcelona fan you’ll meet. Consult your bartender or a taxi service if your conversation about football with him lasts more than four hours.
